Timing Chain Cover & Seal
Removal & Installation
2.0L & 2.2L Engines
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
- If the seal is damaged, remove the front engine mount and seal.
To install:
- If removed, install a new seal.
- Install the front engine mount.
- Install or connect the following:
The timing chain front coverThe cover bolts. Tighten the cover bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)The water pump bolt. Tighten the water pump bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)The idler pulley. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)The drive belt tensionerThe drive belt tensioner bolts. Tighten the drive belt tensioner bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)The crankshaft damper. Refer to Crankshaft Damper removal and installation.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
- Install the engine support fixture:
- Place the engine support fixture legs (1) from the J 28467-B across the engine compartment.
- Install the engine support fixture legs (1) from the J 28467-500 on the engine support fixture long bar (2).
- Install the radiator shelf tube J-28467-2A (1) on top of the strut tower tube J-28467-3 (2) above the engine front (right back) lift hook bracket.
- Install the round tube of the front support assembly J-28467-4A (3) through the large hole in the radiator shelf tube J-28467-2A.
- Position the J-28467-4A front support assembly on to the upper tie bar.
- Install the J-28467-9 7/16 inch x 2.0 inch quick-release pin (4) through the top hole in the J- 28467-4A front support assembly.
- Install the J-28467-1A cross bracket assembly (1).
- Hand tighten the J-28467-1A cross bracket wing nuts (2).
- Install the J-28467-7A bolt hook through the J-28467-6A bracket.
- Install the J-28467-34 lift hook wing nut and washer to the J-28467-7A lift hook.
- Repeat the previous 2 steps in order to assemble 2 lift hooks and brackets.
- Install one of the lift hook and bracket assemblies (1) to the engine support fixture long bar (2).
- Install the other lift hook and bracket assembly (3) to the J-28467-2A radiator shelf tube (4) above the engine front lift bracket.
- Install the lift hook J-28467-7A through the engine rear lift bracket (2).
- Install the lift hook J-28467-7A (3) through the engine front lift bracket (4).
- Hand tighten the lift hook wing nuts J-28467-34 in order to remove all slack from the engine support fixture assembly.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
- Remove the timing chain cover bolts.
- Remove the timing chain cover.
- Remove and discard the timing chain cover seal.
To install:
- Install a NEW timing chain cover seal.
- Install the timing chain cover.
- Install the timing chain cover bolts. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the timing chain cover to water pump bolt. Tighten the bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
- Position the engine mount bracket to the engine.
- Install the engine mount bracket bolts in the following locations:
- The long bolts in the forward and lower rear holes.
- The short bolt in the upper rear hole.
- Tighten the engine mount bracket bolts in the following sequence:
- Upper rear.
- Lower rear.
- Forward..
- Tighten the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
- Install the engine mount to the engine compartment.
- Install the engine mount to side rail nuts. Tighten the nuts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
- Install the engine mount to bracket bolts.
- Tighten the engine mount to bracket bolts in the following sequence:
- Middle.
- Rear.
- Front.
- Tighten the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
- Remove the engine support fixture. Removal is reverse of the installation.
- Install or connect the following:
The windshield washer solvent reservoirThe air cleaner assemblyThe crankshaft damper. Refer to Crankshaft Damper removal and installationThe accessory drive belt tensioner
