Mu3 Transaxle
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the cover from the underhood electrical center.
- Release the forward lamp harness retainer from the ABS modulator bracket, or the proportioning valve bracket, to allow the underhood electrical center to be repositioned adequately.
- Remove the underhood electrical center bracket from the vehicle and reposition the electrical center to access the bracket .
- Release the wiring harness retainers above the brake booster, to allow the electrical center to be repositioned adequately.
- Disconnect the hydraulic clutch hose from the clutch actuator cylinder and the clutch master cylinder.
- Install the engine support fixture.
- Place the engine support fixture long bar (2), from the J 28467-B across the engine compartment .
- Install the engine support fixture legs (3) from the J 43405 on the engine support fixture long bar and center above the engine.
- Install the engine support fixture hooks (4) and engine support fixture handle to the engine support cross bar.
- Place the engine support cross bar over the engine support long bar and connect the hooks to the engine lift brackets.
- Secure the cooling module to the upper body structure.
- Remove the upper transaxle to mount bolts.
- Disconnect the wiring harness retainer from the transaxle stud.
- Remove the upper transaxle to engine stud and bolt.
- Remove the front wheel and tire assemblies.
- Remove the both front fender liners.
- Remove the steering gear mounting bolts and secure the steering gear with mechanic-s wire.
- Disconnect the wheel speed sensor wires from the both front wheels and unclip from the frame.
- Separate the ball joints from the steering knuckles.
- With the wheels in the straight ahead position, remove the key from the ignition switch.
- Secure the cooling module to the upper body structure.
- Remove the left and right splash shields.
- Remove the front transaxle mount to cradle through bolt.
- Remove the rear transaxle mount to frame bolts.
- Remove both stabilizer link to Stabilizer bar nuts.
- Remove both tie rod to steering knuckle nuts.
- Separate the outer tie rods from the steering knuckles.
- Remove the intermediate steering shaft to steering gear pinch bolt and discard.
WARNINGDO NOT rotate the intermediate shaft once separated from the gear. Possible damage or a malfunction could occur. - Disconnect the intermediate steering shaft from the steering gear.
- Remove both lower control arm ball stud to steering knuckle pinch bolts.
WARNINGDo not free the ball stud by using a pickle fork or a wedge-type tool. Damage to the seal or bushing may result. - Lower the lower control arms in order to disengage the steering knuckle.
- Mark the frame to body position with a paint pen or permanent marker.
- Lower the vehicle to about 3 feet off the ground in order to place a hydraulic lift table under the frame.
- Use two 2 x 4's between the lift table and the frame and lift the table to the frame.
- Slowly remove the frame bolts using the following sequence:
- Remove the front frame bolts.
- Partially unscrew the rear frame bolts exposing 1 1 / 2 inches (25mm) of bolt shank.
- Slowly lower the lift table to the floor.
- Drain the transaxle.
- Disconnect the drive axle and intermediate shaft from the transaxle and secure out of the way.
- Remove the starter.
- Disconnect the shift cables from the transaxle. Disconnect the backup lamp switch harness connector.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Use the engine support fixture rear hook to lower the powertrain enough to allow clearance between the side rail and powertrain.
- Raise the vehicle.
- Use a transaxle jack to secure the transaxle, and remove the transaxle to engine bolts.
- Remove the transaxle from the vehicle.
- Remove the front transaxle mount from the transaxle.
- Remove the rear transaxle mount and bracket from the transaxle.
To install:
- Install the rear transaxle mount to the transaxle. Tighten the thru bolt to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).).
- Install the front transaxle mount to the transaxle. Tighten the thru bolt to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
- Use a transaxle jack to position the transaxle to the vehicle.
- Secure the transaxle to the engine. Tighten the bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
- Connect the backup lamp switch harness connector.
- Connect the shift cable to the transaxle.
- Install the starter.
- Connect the drive axle and intermediate shaft to the transaxle.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Use the engine support fixture in order to raise the powertrain assembly.
- Install the left transaxle mount:
- Install the transaxle mount to the mid-rail.
- Install the transaxle mount to mid-rail bolts. Tighten the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
- Using a floor jack, raise the transaxle until it contacts the transaxle mount.
NOTEThe transaxle mount to transaxle bolts must be hand started. Do not pry the transaxle or mount to align the holes. - Hand start the transaxle mount to bracket bolts using the following sequence:
Rear boltMiddle boltFront bolt - Using the previous sequence, tighten the transaxle mount bolts. Tighten the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
- Install the underhood electrical center bracket to the vehicle and install the electrical center into position on the bracket.
- With the frame on the lift table, raise the frame to the vehicle.
- Hand-start all the frame bolts while aligning the frame to the paint marks.
- Tighten the frame bolts. Tighten the bolts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) plus 180°.
- Lower and remove the hydraulic table.
- Connect the lower control arm to the steering knuckle.
NOTEThe torque sequence must be followed in the order that is listed. - Install the ball joint pinch bolt and nut.
NOTEThe front and rear transaxle mounts must be allowed to settle with the through bolts loosened.
First Pass: Tighten the nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Reverse nut 3 / 4 turnSecond Pass: Tighten the nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) plus 30°. - Hand-start the front transaxle mount through bolt.
- Loosen the rear transaxle mount through bolt.
- Tighten the rear transaxle mount to frame bolts. Tighten the rear bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
- Tighten the front and rear transaxle mount through bolts in the following order. Tighten the rear bolt to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm). Tighten the front bolt to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
- Install the outer tie rods to the steering knuckles.
- Install the new outer tie rod to the knuckle nuts. Tighten the nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) plus 180°.
- Connect the control links to the Stabilizer bar.
- Connect the intermediate shaft to the steering gear.
- Install a new intermediate shaft pinch bolt. Tighten the bolt to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
- Install the left and right splash shields.
- Remove the engine support fixture.
- Install the top engine to transaxle bolt. Tighten the bolt to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
- Install the top engine to transaxle stud. Tighten the stud to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
- Connect the wiring harness retainer to the transaxle stud.
- Connect the hydraulic clutch hose to the clutch actuator cylinder. Bleed the clutch hydraulic system.
- Install the underhood electrical center bracket to the vehicle and install the electrical center into position on the bracket.
- Secure the forward lamp harness retainer to the ABS modulator bracket, or the proportioning valve bracket.
- Connect the electrical connector to the brake fluid level sensor, then press forward on the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) tab of the connector to secure.
- Install the cover to the underhood electrical center.
- Release the cooling module from the upper body structure.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- Fill the transaxle to the proper level.
