Balance Shaft

Removal & Installation

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
2. Remove the balance shaft bearing carrier bolts.
   
   WARNING

   It is possible to install the intake side balance shaft into the exhaust side and vice versa. Please use care not to install the balance shafts into the wrong bores. Engine vibration will result. Do not remove the bolt holding the sprocket.

3. Remove the balance shaft assemblies.
   
   WARNING

   Proper centering of the tool is required on the balance shaft bushing. If the tool is not properly centered, then damage to the bearing bore and block will occur.

4. Install tool J 43650 into the balance shaft hole. Insert the tool with the foot parallel to the shaft.

5. When the J 43650 is inserted in the block turn the tool so that the foot becomes perpendicular to the shaft.
6. Center the foot of the tool on the balance shaft bushing.
7. Once the tool is centered on the balance shaft bushing, then insert the centering guide into the front balance shaft bore and tighten the nut with an appropriate wrench. When the tool is properly installed, before removing the bushing, the end of the tool should be 4.6 inches (116mm) (a) from the block face. If the tool is less than approximately 4.5 inches (114mm) (a), recheck the tool alignment.
8. Tighten the nut on the tool until the tension releases. When the tension releases, remove the tool and the balance shaft bushing.

To install:

1. Install the balance shaft bushing using the J 43650.
2. Seat the balance shaft bushing into the bore using the J 43650 and a wrench.
3. When the J 43650 is fully seated in the engine block, remove it with a wrench.
   
   WARNING

   If the balance shafts are not properly timed to the engine, the engine may vibrate or make noise.
4. Install the balance shaft assemblies to the engine using the following steps:
   1. Place the number one piston at Top Dead Center (TDC).
   2. Lubricate the balance shaft lobes with engine oil.
   3. Install the balance shafts into their bores.
   4. Install the balance shaft retaining bolts. Tighten the balance shaft retaining bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
