1989 Ford Taurus: Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Testing?

Yes you can Test the sensor before replacing it.
The test will confirm the problem with the sensor.
There are two wires which come from the sensor.
You will need volt meter to test the Voltage.
To test the ECT sensor, you can measure voltage across the 2 wires with the sensor plugged in and the key on with the engine hot.

Use the chart below to see if the signal is in range.

Loosing Coolant?

Coolant is getting low every few weeks.Its not leaking.
If it is then also no leak is seen.

If you are losing coolant, it has to be going somewhere. Just because you cannot "see" a leak, doesn't mean there isn't one.When there is leak,then only you loose coolant so quickly in few weeks/. Its advisable and recommended to get the system "pressure tested".
In this process  a tool is inserted in place of your radiator cap, and pressure is added to the system. Using the gauge on the tool, you can watch if the pressure drops, and then inspect for leaks. Could be a head gasket with a small crack, could be a leak somewhere you cannot easily see.
This procedure will help to trace the minor leak.

So further repairs or parts replace can be done.
